"It’s a strange world out there," is a common reaction to those daily admiring the mysterious photos of a man named Huffer. As the mastermind behind the online experience known as "Explain This Image," Huffer uses his viewers to look for explanations to the seemingly inexplicable.
Every picture tells a story. Some are blatantly obvious, while others leave the viewer rubbing their eyes in astonishment. Sometimes it takes a closer look to discover hidden details, secret messages, or scandals. Alcoholic family get-togethers, erect genitals on the beach, children in front of burning buildings – all are likely discoveries upon a second glance. The essence of the madness in the world is captured on millions of pixels, and presented in “Explain This Image.”
"Life is pretty slanted," said Huffer. As the purveyor of “Explain This Image,” he is faced with new and obscure motifs daily. On his website he shares his passion for strange photos with a few million users. Viewers are encouraged to comment on photos, casting them in an ever-changing light. Huffer and his production company staff at A Horse and a Huffer are rarely surprised about news from Absurdistan. We spoke with Huffer to find out just what we should be seeing.

HUFFER
An dieser Stelle hätten wir Euch gern mehr über den Mann, namens Huffer erzählt.
Huffer sagt nicht wer er ist, wo er ist und auch nicht wie alt er ist. Schön das er trotzdem mit uns gesprochen hat.

A — What’s your favorite part of your site?
H — For me the comments are the best part! I like the pictures we get, but the collective imagination and user comments are just fantastic.

A — Where do you find yourself in the real world?
H — We developed the site in 2008 in secret. We’ve been in a totally lab ever since, planning for world domination. We can’t take credit for the swine flu epidemic, but if there’s a horse flu outbreak, you can blame us.

H — In many social circles we have found ourselves running into the same strange types of photos. Each person has a different creative approach to what a particular photo is supposed to represent. Making comments about the photos turned out to be just as much fun as the photos themselves. I thought it would be great to develop a site that is dedicated exclusively to the interpretation of strange photos. Our concern is getting people to write down their explanations for the seemingly inexplicable. The most hilarious and striking observations are in the user voting section at the top.

A — How did you get the idea for “Explain This Image”?
ABOUT — Seriously, where do all of these weird pictures come from?
Clenching frenzy is available here: www.explainthisimage.com
HUFFER — Luckily we are blessed with an active user community which provides us with all these bizarre photos. It’s a damned strange world out there!
